A review of Big Daddy (1999)

Actor and comedian Adam Sandler has been on the edge of being a top box office draw for sometime. His early promise turned into an established promise but his obvious talents have never quite blossomed to the levels expected. Some of the movies that he has chosen as vehicles to stardom have raised just as many eyebrows as they have laughs. This article takes a look at one of them and provide a review of Big Daddy (1999).

Big Daddy plotline

The star of Big Daddy, Adam Sandler plays Sonny Kaufax, a bachelor above thirty living in New York city. Despite having gained a law degree, he is more than content to waste away his days in a part-time job as a toll booth attendant mainly surviving on the cash award he was given from a minor traffic accident the previous year . His friends are more goal-orientated and this eventually leads to his girlfriend, played by Kristy Swanson, dumping him and moving in with a much older man. Although upset, Sonny doesn't have to time to grieve about the lost relationship as he is suddenly expected to care for the illegitimate son of his best friend. At first, Sonny rejects the idea and marches the young boy, Julian down to Social Services. He soon has a change of heart though when he thinks he can win his girlfriend back by showing maturity in bringing up the boy. Despite the shallow intentions, Sonny develops a bond with Julian and a sense of purpose in his life. By no means an ideal role model, Sonny tries to instil good values into Julian by resorting to mimicking a toy action hero called Scuba Steve. Big Daddy then piles on the heartache when Social Services decide they want the boy back. After a court case, Julian is handed back to his biological father to the dismay of Sonny and the boy. The outcome is not as brutal as they believe it at the time and one year on the Big Daddy film closes with everyone enjoying their positions in life.
